Despite the recommendations, many people fall short of their daily protein needs. In India, the average protein intake is around 0.6 g/kg, below the suggested 0.8 to 1 g/kg. A 2017 survey revealed that 73% of Indians are protein deficient, with over 90% unaware of their daily protein requirements.

For example, a person weighing 65 kg who consumes a typical diet of idlis, sambar, rice, vegetables, chapatis, kuruma, and milk may only get about 43.3 grams of protein, which is less than the required 52-65 grams. This diet is often high in carbohydrates and may not provide sufficient protein for muscle maintenance and overall health. A balanced diet, with an increased focus on protein, can address this gap.
